XFLR 5 - DESIGNING AN AIRPLANE

AIRPLANE DESIGNING

Hi friends i hope you all liked the wing designing and analysis part and also tried it over various airfoil designs in the airfoil database. This analysis helped us in understanding the basic concepts and also the theory behind the lift generation and the selection of these kind of airfoils.

Coming to the topic, today we'l learn how to design the complete plane by using various airfoils.

Now let's get started with the designing part.

DESIGNING

1. Go to ------> ( http://aerospace.illinois.edu/m-selig/ads/coord_database.html) and go through the various types of airfoils some of which you might haven't heard of.

2. Select the type of airfoil you require to experiment upon and download the ".dat file".

3. Open XFLR5 ---------> Choose the FILE option in the toolbar and open "Direct Foil Design" or you may also simply type "CLT + 1".

4. Choose the OPEN option on the toolbar and open the .dat file downloaded.

5. Open "Wing and Plane Design" from file on toolbar or type "CLT + 6".

You can see a 3D space being created for the designing part.

7. Click on BODY from the toolbar and choose "Define a new body". You will observe a new dialog bow containing 2D and 3D view of a fuselage.

8. On the RHS we got "FRAME 2", in which we can observe the points which are helpful in modifying the shape of the fuselage.

9. In the 2D figure each point on the center axis line denotes the external surface which is highlighted in thick blue circular strip which can be modified in the frame 2 on RHS.

10. In the 2D figure there are no points after the neck section, not to worry by right clicking over the axis we can insert points of our desire and also modify them as done in the previous steps.

After the completion of the design of the fuselage now we have to design our main wing, elevator and rudder part.

11. Click on "Wing-plane" in the toolbar and choose "Design New Plane", a new dialog box will open containing 3 sections.
a) Main Wing
b) Elevator
c) Fin

12. You can go through the designing basics in our previous paper "XFLR 5 - WING DESIGN AND ANALYSIS", and go through the steps of general modification and designing of the wing and other 2 control surfaces using the same steps.

MAIN WING DESIGN

ELEVATOR DESIGN

FIN DESIGN

AFTER THE COMPLETION WE WILL GET THE FINAL DESIGN SOMETHING
LIKE THIS AND ALSO MODIFY IT FURTHER.

Thank you for patience and please practice this over various airfoils available.
